Steve Gordon and The Hand to Heart Project featured in Humans of the Upper Valley

May 11, 2026 //  by Kristen Avery//  Leave a Comment

The Hand to Heart Project and executive director Steve Gordon were featured recently in Humans of the Upper Valley, an initiative affiliated with Dartmouth College that highlights the stories of a wide range of people in the area using their own words.

Humans of the Upper Valley was launched in 2020 by Emily Walton, a sociology professor at Dartmouth, with the help of one of her students at the time. The project, which has so far featured more than 90 people in the area, publishes edited transcripts of interviews with the subjects. The people featured have included teachers, farmers, bakers, writers, performers, health care workers and athletes, among many others. “Through these stories, we hope to get at the heart of the human experience, highlighting our common humanity,” according to the Humans website.

Professor Walton’s latest book is called Homesick: Race and Exclusion in Rural New England.
